Busy Bandung

January 11th, 2014

I was in Bandung for the second time. The first was in 2012. This time I took a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur. When the plane finally landed and I saw the airport for the first time, I thought the airport looked like a tiny shophouse. Reminded me of the airport in Yogyakarta. I took a cab to the hotel. It took an hour just to get there due to the terrible traffic. I seriously do not know how the locals can stand this madness.

Day 2, I rented a car with a driver. First stop was Tangkuban Perahu. I wouldn’t say it was magnificent. I only saw the main crater. Didn’t see Kawah Dormas, Kawah Ratu or Kawah Upas (Upih?). Too many people. Plus I wasn’t going to spend 2 hours hiking or spend a million rupiah for a guide. It was drizzling when we arrived. It made the air colder and covered up the smell of sulphur so it wasn’t too overwhelming. There were so many sellers and dare I say more than the visitors. The sellers will stop bothering you if you just say “Nggak mau”, Indonesian for “I don’t want”. I spent just under an hour there as I lost interest with each passing minute.

From Tangkuban Perahu, I requested “bapak” to take me to Paris Van Java. Boy the traffic was so terrible and when we finally got to PVJ, the carpark was full and we ended up parking at level 9. I didn’t know where to go as there was no directory. How can a mall not have directory? So I kept walking until I came across a dead end. If you’re looking for retail therapy, this is the place to be.

Rows and rows of boutiques. The things there was definitely cheaper compared to Malaysia. Cheaper by around 60 bucks. I ended up buying a pair of sneakers at DC.

Day 3 was my last day there. Early in the morning, after breakfast I went to Pasar Baru Trade Centre to do some shopping. It took 15 minutes to walk from my hotel to Pasar Baru. Here you will bump into Malaysians as this place is popular with Malaysians due to the lovely fabrics and cheap prices. I ended up buying 8 metres of fabrics, a bag, perfumes and sandals. All in all it only cost me 420,000 rupiah. So my Raya shopping for 2014 was done! And a few hours later, I continued my journey to Bali!

Useful information:

1. I stayed at Unique Guesthouse. RM50 for two nights. Queen bed, small tv, fan and shared bathroom.

2. Taxi from the airport to the hotel is 50,000 rupiah.

3. Car rental with driver to Tangkuban Perahu is 400,000 inclusive of petrol and a few other places. Exclude entrance and parking.

4. Entrance fee for foreigners in Tangkuban is 75,000 starting January 2014. An increase of 25,000 rupiah.

5. Do not come to Bandung on weekends!
